Build a fair comparison set
“Which row is best?” is too broad when the rows solve different problems. Start with a neutral description such as “lightweight zip jacket with measured chest width” or “small shoulder bag with a secure closure.” That sentence becomes the entry rule for the comparison.
- Keep the product category the same.
- Use the same required feature or use case.
- Compare similar included parts and packaging where possible.
- Remove any row whose destination no longer matches the item identity.
- Limit the first set to three to five rows.
Use a six-field evidence matrix
For sizing, record comparable measurements, units, option labels, and the measuring method. A generic size label should never outrank those fields.

A worked jacket comparison
Imagine three neutral jacket rows. They all appear to meet the same use case, but the evidence differs:
Row A: lower price, weak fit evidence
Clear front and back photos, but no chest or shoulder measurement. The source matches. Packed weight is unknown. Keep only if fit can be researched before the decision.
Row B: stronger research candidate
Useful lining, zipper, cuff, and pocket photos; flat measurements; current source match; and a stated garment weight with date context. The price is higher, but the uncertainty is lower.
Row C: remove for now
The thumbnail suggests a jacket, but the destination opens a different outerwear item. Several photos are listing images and the size information cannot be matched to the visible option. No price difference repairs the identity problem.
The method does not declare Row B “good” in an absolute sense. It says Row B is easier to research and compare because more of the required evidence is visible.
Use scoring only as an organizing tool
Give each field 0, 1, or 2 points: 0 means missing or contradictory, 1 means partial, and 2 means clear enough for comparison. A score does not verify quality. Its purpose is to expose why one row survived while another depended on guessing.
Do not compensate for a zero in item identity or source match by adding points elsewhere. A detailed but mismatched row is not a comparable candidate.
Break ties with uncertainty, not hype
- Prefer the row with the clearest item and option match.
- Then prefer the row with measurements or specifications you can compare.
- Then prefer the photo set that answers more category-specific questions.
- Only after those checks, compare current visible price and likely shipping impact.
Popularity, a dramatic title, or a “best” label should not break a tie unless it leads to recent evidence you can independently assess.
The 20-minute shortlist workflow
- Minutes 0–3: define the category, use case, and required measurement or feature.
- Minutes 3–8: collect no more than five rows.
- Minutes 8–15: fill the six fields and remove identity failures.
- Minutes 15–18: break ties using the uncertainty rule.
- Minutes 18–20: write one save reason and one next check for each survivor.
Your final shortlist should be boringly clear
Two well-explained survivors are more useful than fifteen saved rows that need the same research again tomorrow.
